Celebrating a Successful Nelson Mandela Day Event
Every July 18th, I have the honor of organizing the YALI Learn Event to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy and make a positive impact on the world. Supported by the Department of State in Washington, DC, this initiative is a continuation of my journey after completing the YALI program in Accra, Ghana.
This year’s event was a remarkable success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of YALI-RLC alumni volunteers across Nigeria. These dedicated volunteers coordinated the event in their respective locations, using a provided template and later submitting detailed event reports for compilation. In Abuja, I worked closely with the American Corner staff to plan all activities, including securing the presence of the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, who delivered an inspiring opening remark.
We were thrilled to see a total of 527 registered participants, who joined either virtually through one of the 25 American Spaces or onsite at any of the four American Corners. The event was a blend of virtual and in-person interactions, maximizing our reach and impact. Volunteers who supported the event were recognized with t-shirts and certificates of appreciation, presented by the U.S. Ambassador after his opening remarks.
The event featured an array of resourceful speakers from the USGEA platform, including esteemed alumni from IVLP, MWF, and YALI. We were also honored to have a tech startup leader and a United Nations thought leader share their insights. Participants expressed immense enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn more, underscoring the event's profound impact and success.
The YALI Learn Event continues to foster collaboration, learning, and empowerment, resonating deeply with Nelson Mandela’s legacy. We look forward to nurturing our relationships with the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, and the American Spaces, as we strive to inspire and empower future leaders.Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and successful. Together, we honor Mandela’s legacy and work towards a brighter future.
